Halloween may be over, but residents still have a chance to put their pumpkins to good use.
The University of Illinois Extension will host its annual Pumpkin Smash from 9 a.m. until noon Saturday, November 7, at the former Fairview Park swimming pool parking lot in Decatur.
The free event will give families an opportunity to smash their pumpkins, take part in games and learn how pumpkins can be turned into nutrient-rich compost instead of ending up in a landfill.
Organizers ask residents to remove candles, ribbons, paint and other decorations before bringing their pumpkins. The pumpkins will be transported to a composting facility following the event.
The Pumpkin Smash will take place at 2640 North Fairview Avenue.
