As children across Central Illinois get ready for Halloween festivities tonight and tomorrow, safety officials are reminding families and drivers to take a few extra precautions.
With trick-or-treating taking place Friday and Saturday in several area communities, motorists are being urged to slow down and watch carefully for children walking through neighborhoods.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says drivers should be especially alert around intersections, driveways and parked vehicles, where children may unexpectedly enter the roadway.
Parents are encouraged to make sure children are visible after dark by using flashlights, glow sticks or reflective tape on costumes and treat bags.
Children should use sidewalks whenever possible, cross streets at intersections and look both ways before crossing. Younger children should be accompanied by an adult, while older children should travel in groups and stick to familiar neighborhoods.
Families should also check costumes to make sure they fit properly and do not create tripping hazards. Face paint can be a safer alternative to masks that may limit a child’s vision.
Parents are also reminded to inspect Halloween candy before children eat it and remove any treats that appear damaged or unwrapped.
Those handing out candy can help by keeping porches and walkways well-lit and free of obstacles. Pet owners should also keep animals secured while trick-or-treaters are visiting.
With Halloween falling on a Saturday, there may also be more traffic from parties and other weekend activities. Anyone planning to drink should arrange for a sober ride home.
Officials say a little extra caution from drivers, parents and trick-or-treaters can help make Halloween weekend a safe and enjoyable one for everyone.
