Illinois families saved more than expected during August’s 10-day back-to-school sales tax holiday. State officials say residents kept a combined 11-point-4 million dollars in their pockets, topping the original estimate of 10 million.
The tax break was approved as part of the annual state budget package, aimed at easing costs for school supplies and other qualifying items. Representative Kam Buckner, a Chicago Democrat who supported the measure, says economic uncertainty will remain a major focus for lawmakers when they return for the fall veto session next month. He says the savings show the state can deliver targeted relief to families.
