A major infrastructure project in Decatur is now complete.
Macon County officials marked the completion of the $33 million Reas Bridge project Monday, October 26th, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The project replaced two aging bridge structures carrying Reas Bridge Road over Lake Decatur on the northeast side of the city.
Construction began in late 2023 and took nearly three years to complete. The previous bridges were considered structurally deficient, making replacement an important investment in the area’s transportation system.
The new bridges are expected to improve safety for school buses, support regional commerce and provide a reliable transportation connection for years to come. The project also removes previous weight restrictions, allowing heavier trucks, including grain trucks serving local industries, to use the route.
The approximately $33 million project received support from state and federal partners, including U.S. Senator Dick Durbin, former Congressman Rodney Davis, Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski and the Illinois Department of Transportation.
The project’s completion marks the second major infrastructure milestone for Decatur in recent months. The city celebrated the opening of the Brush College Road and Faries Parkway overpass in September. That $93 million project was designed to improve traffic flow and reduce delays caused by trains crossing the roadway.
Together, the projects represent significant investments in Decatur’s transportation network, with an emphasis on improving safety, keeping traffic moving and supporting the area’s industrial and commercial activity.
