The Taylorville Police Department is reminding drivers to stop for crossing guards and never attempt to drive around them while they are in a crosswalk.
In a social media post, police say officers dealt with multiple drivers who disobeyed crossing guards on Tuesday. The department warns that the violations put crossing guards and children at risk.
Police say drivers who ignore crossing guards could be pulled over, ticketed and required to appear in court.
Illinois law requires drivers to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks under specified conditions. In posted school zones, drivers must also stop and yield to pedestrians when children are present and the conditions outlined in state law are met. A first violation of the school-zone crosswalk law carries a minimum fine of $150, with a minimum fine of $300 for a second or subsequent violation.
Taylorville police are asking drivers to be patient, wait until the crossing guard has safely cleared the roadway, and help protect children traveling to and from school.
