Decatur Memorial Hospital is giving residents an opportunity to learn more about an invisible health risk that could be inside their homes.
The hospital will host a local watch party Wednesday, November 4, for a free educational webinar about radon. The program runs from noon to 1 p.m. in Classroom A at Decatur Memorial Hospital, 2300 North Edward Street.
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can enter homes through cracks and openings in foundations. Because it has no smell, color or taste, people cannot tell whether their home has elevated levels without testing.
Long-term exposure to radon can increase the risk of lung cancer. The Illinois Department of Public Health recommends that homeowners take steps to reduce radon levels when testing shows concentrations above four picocuries per liter of air.
The webinar will explain how to test a home for radon, understand the results and take steps to reduce exposure. Short-term radon test kits valued at $30 will also be available at participating watch parties while supplies last.
Residents who cannot attend in person can participate online.
Registration information is available through the webinar’s event page. For more information about radon testing and protecting your home, visit the Illinois Department of Public Health website at dph.illinois.gov and search for radon.
