Ameren Illinois employees with ties to Decatur and the surrounding area are competing this week in the 42nd International Lineman’s Rodeo in Overland Park, Kansas.
The competition runs October 14 through 17 and brings together lineworkers and apprentices from around the world to demonstrate their technical skills, teamwork and safety practices.
Representing the Decatur Operating Center are apprentice Thomas Gettings and journeyman Brian Courtright. Courtright is competing on a team with Clayton Gulley and Austin Lewis, both from the Marion Operating Center.
The competition includes events based on real-world situations lineworkers face on the job. Events include a rescue simulation involving an injured worker on a utility pole, timed pole climbs and mystery events that test technical skills, safety and decision-making. Apprentices also take a written exam.
Ameren Illinois says the rodeo gives employees an opportunity to showcase the skills they use to keep electricity flowing while learning from other professionals in the industry.
