The City of Decatur is launching a new neighborhood cleanup program to help residents dispose of unwanted household items at no cost.
The program is being offered in partnership with a local hauler and will be available in targeted neighborhoods throughout the city. Residents in participating neighborhoods will receive notices by mail with instructions and a designated time frame to place eligible items at the curb for collection.
Accepted items include appliances without Freon, carpeting, furniture, scrap metal, wood items and mattresses.
Items that will not be collected include automotive products and fluids, hazardous chemicals, metal fencing, batteries, concrete, rocks and railroad ties. Other items not specifically approved for collection, including items larger than a household appliance, will also be excluded.
The city says it hopes to offer the program to as many Decatur neighborhoods as possible.
