Illinois anglers can mark their calendars for the 2026 fall trout season, opening Saturday, October 17th, at 60 ponds, lakes, and streams across the state. Early catch-and-release fishing began last Saturday at select locations, but trout may not be kept until 5 a.m. on opening day. The Illinois Catchable Trout Program is supported by inland trout stamp sales, helping fund the stocking of more than 80,000 rainbow trout each year. Anglers are reminded to check site rules and license requirements before heading out, as fall trout fishing remains one of Illinois’ most popular seasonal outdoor traditions.
