A Decatur woman faces three felony counts of aggravated battery after police say she stabbed a friend during an altercation Sunday morning, October 11.
Cynthia Dear, 44, was charged following the incident near Pearl and Illinois streets, according to court documents.
Police said the dispute began after the victim made a comment about Dear’s hair. Investigators allege the argument escalated into a physical confrontation, during which the victim was struck and sprayed with pepper spray before being stabbed in the chest.
The victim was taken to Decatur Memorial Hospital, where she received stitches for an injury that was not considered life-threatening.
According to the police account, officers later located Dear in a vehicle and recovered a knife with blood on it. Police also reported finding a can of pepper spray.
Dear was charged with three counts of aggravated battery, alleging the use of a deadly weapon, great bodily harm and an incident occurring in a public place.
Dear appeared in court Tuesday, October 13. A judge denied her pretrial release. She is scheduled for a preliminary hearing October 28, when she is expected to enter a plea.
The charges are allegations, and Dear is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
