Decatur firefighters responded to two residential structure fires just a few hours apart overnight Wednesday into Thursday.The first fire was reported at about 10:55 p.m. Wednesday at a home in the 600 block of West Grand Avenue.
Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the rear of the residence. The fire had extended through the garage roof and was threatening the second floor.
Crews attacked the fire while additional firefighters searched the home, established a water supply and worked to prevent the fire from spreading. The fire was brought under control, followed by extensive overhaul operations.
The residence was unoccupied at the time, and no injuries were reported.
Just a few hours later, at approximately 2:33 a.m. Thursday, firefighters were called to a second residential fire at 934 East Main Street.
Crews again encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from the rear of the home. Firefighters conducted an interior attack while additional crews searched the residence, established a water supply and performed roof ventilation.
An additional engine company was called in because of the intensity of the fire. Firefighters eventually extinguished the blaze and conducted extensive overhaul operations.
The American Red Cross is assisting the occupant. No civilian injuries were reported in either fire.
The Decatur Fire Department has not released information about the cause of either fire.
