An 86-year-old Shelby County man has died after contracting West Nile Virus. Health officials say the mosquito-borne illness contributed to his death. The Shelby County Health Department is urging residents to take precautions, especially during peak mosquito activity around dawn and dusk. Recommended steps include using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants outdoors, and removing standing water from yards, flowerpots, gutters, and containers where mosquitoes can breed. West Nile Virus is spread through infected mosquito bites, and while many people show mild or no symptoms, older adults and those with weakened immune systems face a higher risk of severe illness.
