The 37th annual DRC Shoreline Classic will bring runners and spectators to Lake Decatur this weekend.
The annual road race is set for Sunday, October 4, with both the 15K and 5K courses running along the shores of Lake Decatur in a fall setting.
The 15K will begin at 7:30 a.m., followed by the 5K at 8 a.m. Both races start and finish in the Nelson Park area. Race-day packet pickup will be available at Nelson Park Pavilion 2.
Organizers describe the Shoreline Classic as a competitive and recreational event designed to promote healthy living. The 5K features a faster course, while the 15K includes more rolling terrain.
This year’s 15K course has been officially certified for the next 10 years. Organizers say the certification will allow the Shoreline Classic to pursue growth and work toward restoring the race’s prominence in the community.
The event also has an impact beyond race day. The Shoreline Classic provides financial support for local and high school running programs, with participants able to nominate schools for cash awards. The program has provided more than $41,000 to local running programs through 2019.
The race is also designed as a family event. A series of Tot Trot races for children ages 1 through 14 will be held Friday evening at the Beach House, beginning at 6 p.m.
There will be some traffic and park impacts Sunday morning. Nelson Park and Chandler Park will be closed from 7 to 10:30 a.m. to provide a safe course for runners, volunteers and spectators.
The affected areas include Chandler Park at Lost Bridge and Lake Front Road, along with Nelson Park at 22nd Avenue and Cantrell Street and at Powers Street and Nelson Street.
Race participants and volunteers are required to have their vehicles parked by 7 a.m.
The Shoreline Classic is open to both competitive runners and recreational participants. Race-day registration remains available for the 5K and 15K, although shirts are not guaranteed for those registering on race day.
