Harvest season is getting underway across Central Illinois, and that means drivers will likely see more farm equipment traveling on area roads in the coming weeks.
The Macon County Health Department is reminding motorists to use extra caution when approaching tractors, combines and other large farm equipment.
Farm machinery can be large, slow-moving and may need additional space to turn or maneuver. Drivers should slow down when approaching farm equipment and give operators plenty of room.
Motorists should also stay alert for equipment making turns into fields or driveways. A tractor or combine may need to move toward the center of the road before making a wide turn.
Drivers are encouraged to be patient and avoid passing unless it can be done safely and legally. Extra caution is especially important on rural roads where visibility can be limited.
The health department says sharing the road and slowing down can help farmers, motorists and passengers get home safely during the busy harvest season.
