URBANA — MacArthur opened its 2026 volleyball season with a comeback Monday night, rallying after dropping the opening set to defeat Urbana 2-1 on the road.
The Generals fell behind after Urbana took the first set 25-18, putting MacArthur in an early hole in its first match of the season.
MacArthur responded in the second set, reversing the seven-point margin from the opener with a 25-17 victory to even the match at one set apiece.
That set up a much tighter finish.
Neither team was able to create the separation it found earlier in the match, and the deciding third set went beyond the usual 25-point mark. MacArthur eventually broke through for a 26-24 victory, taking the final two sets to complete the comeback.
The Generals outscored Urbana 51-41 over the final two sets after being outscored 25-18 in the opener.
Monday marked the fourth consecutive season MacArthur and Urbana have opened their schedules against one another. The Generals also won last year’s opener, sweeping the Tigers 25-19 and 25-13.
MacArthur begins the season 1-0, while Urbana falls to 0-1.
The Generals won’t have to wait long for their second match. MacArthur travels to face Sacred Heart-Griffin at 6 p.m. The Cyclones also enter the matchup at 0-1, giving MacArthur an opportunity to begin the season with consecutive victories.
