A Decatur native is being remembered as a hero after losing his life while saving a young girl from a rip current off the coast of Myrtle Beach.
Forty-seven-year-old Derrick Moore, an elementary school teacher who had been living in Georgia, was at the beach on August 7th when he saw the child struggling in the water. Authorities say Moore jumped in to help, pulling the girl from danger before he was overcome by the current himself.
Police say Moore was pulled under during the rescue. Search crews later found his body the next morning, nearly a mile from where he had entered the water.
The young girl survived.
Moore’s family says he did not know the child he saved. They say he simply saw someone in danger and acted without hesitation. Loved ones are now remembering him as a selfless man, a dedicated teacher, and someone whose final act reflected the way he lived his life—putting others first.
