As students return to classrooms across Decatur and the surrounding area, drivers are being reminded to slow down and pay extra attention around schools, crosswalks and residential areas.
The return of school brings increased traffic during the morning and afternoon commute, including school buses, parents dropping off and picking up students, children walking or riding bicycles, and student drivers.
The Illinois State Board of Education and Illinois Department of Transportation have urged motorists to give students a brake as schools reopen. Drivers should obey posted school-zone speed limits, watch for pedestrians and crossing guards, and remain alert for children who may enter the roadway unexpectedly.
Drivers should also avoid distractions, particularly cell phone use, while traveling through school zones. Motorists should never pass a vehicle that has stopped for pedestrians or students and should use extra caution whenever children are present.
Parents dropping off or picking up children should follow their school’s designated traffic patterns and avoid stopping in crosswalks, blocking traffic or making unsafe turns.
The Illinois Secretary of State’s 2026 Rules of the Road emphasizes that taking time to refresh driving knowledge can help prevent crashes and reduce risky driving behavior.
With school back in session, officials say the best approach for drivers is simple: slow down, stay alert and expect children to be nearby.
A few extra seconds on the morning or afternoon commute could make the difference between getting where you’re going safely and a serious crash.
