Study: IL Tops Nation in Home Electricity Price Hikes

Illinois is seeing the nation’s steepest jump in residential electricity prices, according to a new 2026 federal snapshot analyzed by SEO Backlinks. The report says the state’s average residential electricity revenue per kilowatt-hour climbed 28.4% from May 2025 to May 2026, reaching 23.85 cents per kilowatt-hour. That far outpaced the national increase of 6.2%, with the U.S. average rising from 17.37 cents to 18.44 cents. The analysis ranked all 50 states and also reviewed residential sales volumes to determine whether price hikes or heavier electricity use drove the increase. Illinois topped the list for price growth.
