Sean Grayson Denied Medical Release from Prison

Former Sangamon County Sheriff’s deputy Sean Grayson will remain behind bars after the Illinois Prisoner Review Board denied his request for medical release Friday. Grayson, who has been diagnosed with cancer, is serving a 20-year sentence for the killing of Sonya Massey. He was convicted last October of second-degree murder. Authorities say Grayson shot and killed Massey, an unarmed Black woman, in July 2024 after she called 9-1-1 to report a possible intruder at her Springfield home. The case drew statewide attention and renewed scrutiny over police response, use of force, and accountability in Illinois.
