Decatur court records show 18-year-old Xzavier Wikoff has been denied pretrial release in connection with the January shooting death of his father, 46-year-old Zachariah Wikoff.
Police say Zachariah Wikoff was found shot near East Wood and South Maffit Streets on January 18. The case has since moved through the court system, with prosecutors arguing over whether Xzavier should remain in custody while awaiting further proceedings.
According to a sworn statement filed in the case, investigators say Xzavier and his father had been arguing before the shooting occurred. The statement says Xzavier later told police he fired the weapon out of fear.
Authorities also say Xzavier did not call 911 after the shooting. According to the statement, he reportedly told police he was afraid he would be arrested.
A judge has now denied Xzavier Wikoff pretrial release, meaning he will remain in custody as the case continues. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 19.
