Litchfield will not field a varsity football team during the 2026 season because of low upperclassmen participation, leaving nine South Central Conference schools with openings on their schedules.
The program announced the decision Thursday. Litchfield officials said meetings earlier in the year created optimism that the Purple Panthers would have enough players, but the anticipated upperclassmen participation did not materialize as the summer progressed.
Litchfield will continue with a junior varsity season, allowing its younger players to develop against athletes closer to their age.
“This was not an easy decision, but the safety of the kids comes first,” the program said in its announcement.
The cancellation creates a conference-wide scheduling problem less than a month before the season begins. The South Central Conference previously had 10 varsity programs playing a complete nine-game conference schedule. Each of the nine remaining teams now has an opening on the date it was scheduled to face Litchfield.
Those openings are spread across the entire regular season:
- Gillespie: August 20
- Greenville: August 28
- Staunton: September 4
- North Mac: September 11
- Southwestern: September 18
- Carlinville: September 25
- Hillsboro: October 2
- Pana: October 9
- Vandalia: October 16
Pana, the conference member closest to the Decatur area, was scheduled to host Litchfield on October 9. The Panthers will now need to find a replacement opponent for that date, play an eight-game regular season or take part in any scheduling changes made by the conference.
Rebuilding the entire conference schedule would not completely eliminate the issue. With nine remaining teams, an odd number of schools would leave one program without a conference opponent each week. Schools may instead search individually for nonconference opponents with corresponding openings.
Litchfield finished 0-9 in 2025 and was defeated by double digits in eight of its nine games. Its closest result was a 30-28 loss to Gillespie in the season opener.
The program said plans for Friday nights remain uncertain. Litchfield officials will also contact families of senior players to discuss how the decision affects their final season.
Litchfield said it intends to resume varsity football as soon as participation numbers allow.
