Police across Illinois marked Police Speed Awareness Day on Wednesday, reminding drivers that slowing down and staying focused can make the difference between life and death.
According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, there have already been 415 fatal crashes statewide so far this year. Law enforcement agencies say many of those tragedies are preventable when drivers make safer choices behind the wheel.
Illinois State Police Trooper Caleb Billingsley says it starts with the basics: put the phone down, keep your eyes on the road, watch for construction zones, obey posted speed limits, and always move over for emergency vehicles and roadside workers.
The awareness campaign comes during what safety officials call the “100 Deadliest Days of Summer.” The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day typically brings more young drivers on the road, increased vacation travel, heavier traffic, and more construction projects across the state.
Police are urging drivers to plan ahead, give themselves extra time, and avoid aggressive driving. Even a few miles per hour over the speed limit can increase the risk of a serious crash—especially in work zones or during busy travel times.
The message from Illinois law enforcement is simple: slow down, stay alert, and help make sure everyone gets home safely.
