Airports in Decatur, Marion, and Quincy could lose federal support under a Trump Administration budget proposal that targets the Essential Air Service program.
The program is designed to help smaller communities maintain commercial air service, especially in areas where flights may not be profitable without federal assistance. For cities like Decatur, that funding helps keep reliable air travel available for residents, businesses, and visitors.
In Decatur, more than six million dollars a year helps support United Express jet service. That service currently offers daily flights to Chicago O’Hare, connecting the community to one of the nation’s busiest airport hubs.
Decatur Park District Executive Director Clay Gerhard says the service plays an important role in the city’s economic growth. He says access to commercial flights helps support business development, tourism, and quality of life for the region.
Gerhard also says that without Essential Air Service funding, commercial air service in Decatur would not be able to continue.
While the proposal raises concerns for affected communities, the future of the program is not yet final. Congress will ultimately decide whether the Essential Air Service program continues to receive funding.
