Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and the State Board of Elections are asking a federal court to dismiss a lawsuit challenging Illinois’ congressional district maps. The case was filed by former state Representative Jeanne Ives in the Central District of Illinois after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling found Louisiana’s congressional map unconstitutional for requiring race-based districts. Ives argues Illinois Democrats used racial lines when drawing the state’s map, a claim she previously called “brazen.” State officials are pushing back, seeking to end the challenge before it moves forward. The case could add Illinois to the growing national fight over redistricting and race.
