Former Sangamon County sheriff’s deputy Sean Grayson is seeking early release from prison after his conviction in the killing of Sonya Massey. Grayson is scheduled to appear before the Illinois Prisoner Review Board on July 31st, following an application for release. He was sentenced in January to 20 years behind bars after being found guilty last October of second-degree murder. Authorities say Grayson shot and killed Massey, an unarmed Black woman, in July 2024 after she called 9-1-1 to report a possible intruder at her Springfield home. The case drew widespread attention and renewed scrutiny over police response and accountability.
