Illinois sits near the middle of the pack when it comes to beer taxes. A new Tax Foundation report ranks the state 27th nationwide, with a beer excise tax of 23 cents per gallon. That’s far below Tennessee, which carries the nation’s highest beer tax burden at $1.29 per gallon. At the other end, Wyoming has the lowest rate at just two cents, followed by Missouri at six cents and Wisconsin at six-and-a-half cents. The report also notes taxes are the most expensive ingredient in beer nationwide, costing more than labor and materials combined.
