DECATUR, Ill. — Decatur Area Habitat for Humanity announced it will cease operations after nearly four decades of serving the community.
The organization, which was founded in 1987, said the decision came after months of evaluation and discussions with Habitat for Humanity International. Leaders previously paused operations in November to assess the affiliate’s long-term sustainability before determining that closure was the most responsible course of action.
During its 39 years in Decatur, the nonprofit helped provide safe and affordable housing for local families through home construction and homeownership programs aimed at building stability and self-reliance.
Although the local affiliate is closing, Habitat for Humanity officials said support for homeowners in the Decatur area will continue. A partner Habitat affiliate will assume responsibility for assisting existing homeowners, and efforts are underway to ensure homes currently under construction are completed.
“The Board of Directors is incredibly proud of the impact this organization has made in the community over the past 39 years,” the board said in a statement. “We are deeply grateful to the dedicated staff, volunteers, donors, and partners who made this work possible.”
As part of the transition, the organization’s commercial property, including the ReStore and related buildings, will be sold through a future in-person auction. Additional details about the auction are expected to be announced later. Items inside the facility will be sold separately through an online auction.
Decatur Area Habitat for Humanity thanked the community for its support over the years and expressed confidence that Habitat for Humanity’s mission will continue to serve families across Illinois through other local affiliates.
