Illinois lawmakers Bill Foster and Delia Ramirez have introduced the Know Your Rights Act, aimed at improving legal protections for immigrants in U.S. detention facilities. The legislation would require the attorney general to implement legal orientation programs in detention centers and jails housing immigrants. These programs are designed to educate detainees about their legal rights, with information provided in English as well as the five most common languages spoken in each facility. According to Foster’s office, the bill seeks to address due process violations and ensure fair treatment for immigrants in custody across the country.
