The Macon Co. Sheriff’s Office has received a few calls from citizens indicating they have received suspicious
phone calls today, identifying themselves as officials from Macon County asking for money. All of these phone
calls have been identified as scams since Macon County never calls asking for money to pay for fines or
services.
The first scam call is a male individual identifying himself as a representative of Pre-Trial Services for Macon
County. The caller indicates they are working to get an inmate in our jail released from jail, and payment is
needed from the person who is called. This scammer is using the names of individuals who are actually in the
custody of the Macon County Jail.
The second scam call is a male voice identifying himself as Lt. Jamie Belcher. The caller indicates the
individual called has missed jury duty. The caller tells the individual that if they pay them several thousand dollars,
they won’t be arrested. The caller goes even further to leave a call back number of (217) 310-9842. When that
number is called, and the voicemail picks up, the recording says it is Lt. Jamie Belcher with the Macon County
Investigations.
If you receive a similar call, please hang up the phone and don’t give out any personal information or send
money to the caller’s desired destination. If you have fallen victim to either of these scams, please contact your
local law enforcement agency to file a complaint.
