Biden Designates 1908 Race Riot Site A National Monument
(Springfield, IL) — The 1908 Race Riot site in Springfield is a National Monument. President Biden signed a proclamation establishing the property as a National Monument. The proclamation comes as the city commemorated the 116th anniversary of the tragic events in August of 1908. Officials say the new national monument will tell the story of a horrific attack by a white mob on a Black community that was representative of the racism, intimidation, and violence that Black Americans experienced across the country.
