Decatur Police Warn About Donation Scam
Decatur police are warning people about a donation scam. Authorities say they have been alerted about people aggressively seeking donations for a child in need of medical care. The group is usually at busy intersections, often wearing orange vests, and holding signs asking for donations for a sick child. Police say this is scam and don’t donate to this group.
In recent weeks, DPD has been alerted to people aggressively seeking donations for a child in need of medical care. We have been unable to make contact with these groups, as they seem to work quickly and then leave the area. Stemming from reports we have received, we have spoken to area law enforcement agencies, as well as researched the group itself. This group generally is at busy intersections, often wearing orange vests, and holding signs asking for donations for a sick child. See the picture below for an example. This isn’t the only sign they are using, but all have been similar in nature
This is a SCAM. Do NOT donate to this group. They are working all over the Midwest and similar scams are occurring across the country. Contact law enforcement if you see them so we can investigate the matter. Although our courts wont let law enforcement prohibit people from asking for money (which is a reason why these type of scams are so popular), if we are able to investigate enough into the matter, and prove it is a scam, then we can arrest the subjects for Theft.
Again, DO NOT DONATE. This is a SCAM!
