Illinois Records More Population Decline

Ten of Illinois’ major metropolitan areas lost population from year-to-year as Illinoisans move to other states. The latest U.S. Census data shows Illinois’ population decline reached record levels in 2021 with nearly all areas of the state seeing fewer people. Of the state’s 102 counties, 81 lost population. Illinois is one of two states to lose population from July 2020 to July 2021.
