The Sierra Club is calling on the Illinois EPA to deny an operating permit to a proposed natural gas plant in Pawnee. The environmental group says Emberclear’s proposed Lincoln Land Energy Center will emit nearly four million tons of carbon pollution each year. The group is also concerned about the plant’s proximity to homes and schools in Pawnee and the risk of pollution. Emberclear says the facility would be transitioning toward using hydrogen during the lifespan of the plant, a nod toward recent legislation requiring the closure of all methane and fossil fuel plants by 2045.
