Illinois Democratic lawmakers are modeling several new bills after a controversial Texas abortion law. Texas’s law effectively bans all abortions after six weeks and lets citizens sue those who aid or perform an abortion. The Illinois House is considering the Expanding Abortion Services Act that would allow citizens to sue those who cause unwanted pregnancies, or perpetuate domestic violence or sexual assault. The Protect Heartbeats Act also under consideration in the state House would allow Illinoisans to sue gun manufacturers, importers, and dealers over deaths or injuries caused by their firearms.
