A federal appeals court is siding with former House Speaker Mike Madigan over an allegation of dirty tricks during the 2016 Democratic primary. Jason Gonzales was Madigan’s challenger in that race and accused the former Speaker of planting sham candidates on the ballot to ensure he won. The Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals ruled yesterday that judges don’t have the authority to punish candidates for a “shady strategy that voters tolerate.” Gonzales was pursuing damages through the court, including costs related to his failed campaign. A further appeal is being considered.
