Republicans in the Illinois House say a sweeping criminal justice reform bill sitting on Governor Pritzker’s desk poses a threat to public safety and crime victims. Representative David Welter of Morris has an issue with a provision ending cash bail. Others pointed out the bill gives those arrested three phone calls instead of the traditional one call, giving them time to call friends to take care of witnesses and go after victims. Backers of the legislation say the changes are needed to address racism in the criminal justice system and end police brutality.
