At approximately 1:05 am Friday morning, DPD officers were called to the area of 1000 E. Leafland on a report of gunshots being fired. While officers were in the area, they heard more shots being fired in the area.
At 1:08 am, a DPD officer turned onto the 1100 block of E. Leafland from Calhoun Street. The officer then observed a subject standing in the roadway in the 1100 block of E. Leafland. The officer then observed the subject fire three shots. The subject then walked out of the roadway and turned and fired a shot in the direction of the officer. The suspect then fled on foot.
A perimeter was quickly established and the suspect was tracked to a house in the 1100 block of E. Leafland. Officers made contact with subjects at the house and secured the residence. Four subjects were detained, a search warrant was obtained, and a search at the house is being conducted.
Following further investigation of this incident, one subject was arrested and booked into the Macon County Jail on charges of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm and Possession of a Weapon by a Felon. The arrested subject is identified as David M. Cotton, age 31. This remains an ongoing investigation.
The DPD officer involved in this incident was not hit by the gunfire and was not injured. The officer was driving a fully marked DPD vehicle, which also was not hit. The officer who was shot at did not return fire and no other officers involved in this incident fired their weapons.
