A Senate Committee is discussing potential changes to Black History Curriculum for students. Members of the Black Legislative Caucus have been pushing to revamp Social Studies lessons to emphasize the contributions of minorities throughout history and provide black and brown students a message of empowerment. Maywood Senator Kimberly Lightford says she was never able to relate or feel a sense of inclusion in Social Studies class. The group also heard from education experts who say Computer Science needs to be emphasized more in school since most jobs require some digital skills.
