According to a release from the DPD, at approximately 9:20 AM on 08/17/20, Decatur Police responded to calls of shots fired at 1300 East Walnut with a person shot inside a vehicle. Upon arriving, responding officers found a male with life-threatening injuries in the vehicle. The victim was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Patrol officers, detectives, Macon County Sheriff’s deputies and Decatur Park Police officers were required to respond to the area to help quell a large, unruly crowd.
As officers were arriving on Walnut, another call was received reference shots fired at MLK and Grand and MLK and Garfield, followed by two victims arriving at DMH with non-life-threaten- ing gunshot wounds. Neither of these victims are cooperating with the police investigation. At the hospital, a large crowd formed which broke out into fights requiring a large police response beyond what was required to investigate the shooting.
At 10:31, a Street Crimes detective in an unmarked vehicle in the area of Jasper and Wood ob- served subjects in a small gold vehicle shooting at another vehicle. The suspect vehicle fled at speeds in excess of 90 mph and was last seen in the area of 18th and Clay. Shortly thereafter, a female victim arrived at SMH with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg, which was sustained during this incident.
While responding to and investigating the above incidents, additional calls were received of nu- merous shots fired in the area of 20th and Prairie, involving subjects in two dark colored vehicles shooting at each other.
