School districts across Illinois are working to address the state’s teacher shortage. The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the need for teachers at a time when the state was already facing a shortage. The Urbana School District for example, has over 100 vacancies. The need for substitutes is also increasing, because of the inability to combine classes to cover for missing teachers because of COVID-19.
