A Clay County couple is suing the Illinois Department of Public Health, its director, the Illinois State Board of Education, and the State Superintendent. James and Kali Mainer claim it’s unlawful to enforce guidelines requiring students to wear face coverings, to submit to temperature checks, and to not gather in groups of more than 50 people inside school buildings. The complaint also claims the couple’s three children are being denied their right to an education. The governor’s office released a statement that the guidelines are necessary to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
