Tension continues to increase between protesters and police in Champaign.
What started as a peaceful protest at the intersection on Prospect Avenue and Town Center Boulevard erupted into a stand-off and looting at a gas station. The protest was organized as a way of demonstrating against long-standing mistrust and mistreatment of black people by law enforcement, but disintegrated into chaos. In protests across the city, properties have been destroyed and objects were thrown at police, who responded with pepper spray.
