Walgreens will have 15 new drive-thru testing sites in seven states, including Arizona, Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, Tennessee, Texas and Illinois,.
The new testing sites will be using Abbott’s new ID NOW COVID-19 test, which gives much quicker test results with positive results being shown in 5 minutes and negative results in 13 minutes.
The 15 locations are being finalized in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. They are planning to select hot spot markets of COVID-19 cases. They will also target the areas with the highest rates of infection.
Walgreens plans to be able to test up to 3,000 people per day across the additional sites.
Walgreens pharmacists will oversee the self-administration of the COVID-19 test.
Patients will be directed to testing locations via an online assessment tool that will be available on Walgreens.com and Walgreens mobile app. Patients will need to pre-register and schedule an appointment for testing beforehand.
The new sites should be beginning later this week.
Testing will be available at no cost to eligible individuals who meet criteria established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
