(Mesa, AZ) — Wednesday’s tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in South Florida hit close to home for Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo. Rizzo is an alumni of the school where at least 17 people have died in a shooting. Rizzo tweeted “Parkland and Coral Springs please stay strong! This is out of control and our country is in desperate need for change. I hope in this the darkest of times back home this brings everyone together and we can find love. You’re all in my prayers.”

(PyeongChang, South Korea) — Snowboarder Shaun White is under fire for remarks he made after winning gold in the men’s halfpipe competition in PyeongChang. White referred to a sexual misconduct lawsuit filed against him in 2016 as “gossip” during a news conference following his gold medal run. In an apology on NBC’s “Today Show” White said, “It was a poor choice of words to describe such a sensitive subject in the world today.”

(PyeongChang, South Korea) — U.S. skier Mikaela Shiffrin earned a gold medal in the women’s giant slalom event. It is the second gold medal in Shiffrin’s Olympic career. She also took home gold in the women’s slalom event at the Sochi Games in 2014. Shiffrin will defend her title in the slalom event tonight at Phoenix Snow Park in PyeongChang.

(Dallas, TX) — The Blues are off again tonight. They visit the Stars tomorrow night in Dallas. It’s the back end of a two-game road trip for St. Louis, which lost 4-3 overtime loss at Nashville on Tuesday. The Blues have dropped two straight and are third in the Central Division with 72 points, five behind the first-place Predators and two ahead of the Stars.

(Chicago, IL) — The Blackhawks try to end a seven-game losing streak when they host the Ducks tonight at the United Center. Chicago has 56 points, putting them in last in the Central Division and falling out of the playoff race. They’re 12 points behind the Wild for the second Wild Card spot in the West. Anaheim has 65 points.

(Jupiter, FL) — Spring training is officially underway for the Cardinals. Pitchers and catchers reported to Jupiter, Florida on Tuesday and held their first formal workout yesterday. Position players are due to arrive in camp on Sunday, with the first full-squad workout to take place on Monday. The Cardinals open Grapefruit League play a week from tomorrow.

(Bloomington, IN) — Leron Black scored a game-high 20 points, but it wasn’t enough as Illinois lost 78-68 at Indiana. Kipper Nichols added 16 points for the Fighting Illini, who lost their fourth in a row. Illinois has lost 10 of its last 12 to fall to 12-and-15 overall and 2-and-12 in Big Ten play. Illinois beat IU the first time 73-71. The Illini host Nebraska on Sunday.

(Austin, TX) — “Johnny Football” is getting another shot at reviving his career. The Spring League announced yesterday that Johnny Manziel will play for the South squad during the two-weekend showcase in Austin, Texas. Manziel’s South team will play games on April 7th and April 14th. The Spring League features four teams comprised mostly of players with NFL experience. Manziel says his main goal is to make it back to the NFL.

(Chicago, IL) — Kyle Lowry and Serge Ibaka each scored 20 points in the Raptors’ 122-98 win over the Bulls at the United Center. Toronto shot 52.2-percent from the field and assisted on 38 of its 48 buckets. Kris Dunn returned from his concussion to score eight points in 20 minutes for Chicago. Dunn had missed 11 games and the Bulls went 3-and-8 in his absence. Chicago is 20-and-37 as they get ready to head out on vacation.

(Undated) — Things got wacky around the NBA on Wednesday night as the league nears the All-Star break. The Warriors lost 123-117 to the Trail Blazers despite a season-high 50 points from Kevin Durant. The Wizards erased a 27-point deficit in a 118-113 win over the Knicks, while the Jazz extended their winning streak to 11 games by taking down the Suns 107-97. The final two games before vacation time are tonight.
