(Chicago, IL) — It may now be a little tougher for police departments in Illinois to take your stuff. Governor Bruce Rauner yesterday signed a new law to tighten the rules for asset forfeiture and force some transparency on police departments across the state. Civil liberty groups, including the ACLU, have complained that asset forfeiture laws allow police officers to seize cars, cash, and homes even when there’s little or no evidence of a crime. Illinois’ new forfeiture law mirrors the federal standard and requires police departments to track what they seize.
