(Springfield, IL) — The days of the old copper wire telephone may be numbered in Illinois. An Illinois Senate panel yesterday approved a plan to allow AT&T to eventually phase-out old phone service. The phone company says it wants to instead invest in cell and data networks. If AT&T gets the okay to phase out the service, customers in every major metro area in the state except Bloomington-Normal could see a change.
