The Illinois Department of Health has temporarily halted repairs of a damaged ceiling in the auditorium at Johns Hill Magnet School.
Ceiling plaster fell from a portion of the ceiling over the stage area on May 3, which damaged some ceiling tiles that contained asbestos. Built in 1928, Johns Hill is one of the oldest buildings in the district that is still in use, and asbestos was a common material when it was new.
The auditorium was immediately sealed and has not been in use, and air quality tests were performed to check for asbestos in the area. None was found, but district spokeswoman Maria Robertson said further tests are under way as an extra precaution.
