University of Illinois Extension serving DeWitt, Macon and Piatt Counties is excited to announce the 2018
Master Gardener Training class is available during evening hours. Master Gardeners are volunteers trained by
University of Illinois Extension researchers and educators. Master Gardeners volunteer their time and
expertise by sharing their horticulture skills with the community through garden projects, educational
outreach and helping others learn to grow.
The 13-week Master Gardener training aims to develop and enhance community programs related to
horticulture and may involve environmental improvements, horticulture therapy projects, community and
school gardening projects or other programs as determined by local need and interest. After completing
training, Master Gardeners agree to give a minimum of 60 volunteer hours to the Extension Horticulture
program over two years.
Topics of interest in the 2018 program are botany, soils, insects, turf and lawns, wildlife, plant pathology and
much more. Program participants will participate in two field trips to explore related topics during the
training program.
Classes will be held on Tuesdays, August 28-November 20 from 5:30-8:30pm at the Macon County Extension
Office located at 3351 N. President Howard Brown Blvd. in Decatur. Cost of the program is $175 for training,
materials and field trips. Deadline to apply is August 14. Partial fee waivers are available.
