(Arlington, TX) — The first round of the NFL Draft is complete and it was not without surprises. The Browns pulled off the first stunner of the night by taking Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield first overall. The Giants picked Penn State running back Saquon [[ SAY-kwon ]] Barkley number-two, with USC QB Sam Darnold going third to the Jets. Rounds two and three are tonight.

(Indianapolis, IN) — The Indianapolis Colts are staying in-state first their first choice in the draft. The Colts chose Notre Dame guard Quenton Nelson with the sixth overall pick in the draft last night. He’ll be tasked with helping to protect Andrew Luck. Fellow Notre Dame lineman Mike McGlinchey went ninth overall to San Francisco. The draft resumes today with rounds two and three. The Colts own three picks in the second round.

(Arlington, TX) — Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio has a new toy to play with in the middle of his defense. Chicago selected rangy linebacker Roquan Smith out of Georgia with the eighth-overall pick in the first round of the NFL Draft. Smith piled up 137 total tackles, 14 for a loss and six-and-a-half sacks in his junior season with the Bulldogs. Chicago has one pick tonight in the second and third rounds, the 39th overall.

(St. Louis, MO) — Dexter Fowler singled in the winning run in the bottom of the 13th inning as the Cardinals outlasted the Mets 4-3 at Busch Stadium. New York took a 3-2 lead in the 10th, but Jose Martinez got St. Louis even again with an RBI double to keep the game going. Tommy Pham went 4-for-6 with an RBI. John Gant got the win.

(Kansas City, MO) — Yoan Moncada hit one of five White Sox homers in a 6-3 win over the Royals in the first of a five-game series at Kauffman Stadium. Moncada has three homers in his last four games to give him six on the season. Matt Davidson hit two bombs, and Trayce Thompson and Welington Castillo also went deep. Lucas Giolito picked up his first win of the season and Joakim Soria posted his third save.

(Chicago, IL) — Kyle Hendricks and two relievers combined to help the Cubs blank the Brewers 1-0 at Wrigley Field in the first of a four-game series. Hendricks tossed seven shutout innings to move to 2-and-1. Kyle Schwarber’s solo homer in the sixth was the only offense Chicago would need. Milwaukee fell percentage points behind the Cardinals for first in the NL Central, with the Cubs two games back.

(Milwaukee, WI) — There will be a Game Seven in the first-round series between the Celtics and Bucks. Giannis Antetokounmpo [[ YAH-niss ah-det-oh-KOOM-boh ]] put up 31 points and 14 rebounds as Milwaukee beat visiting Boston 97-86 in Game Six. The Celtics will host the series decider tomorrow night. The winner will go up against the 76ers in round two.

(Undated) — The Golden Knights and Penguins opened the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs with wins. Vegas crushed visiting San Jose 7-0 with Marc-Andre Fleury recording his third shutout this postseason. The Penguins scored three times in the third to erase a 2-0 deficit and beat the Capitals 3-2 in D.C. Tonight, the Jets play the Predators in their second-round opener in Nashville.

(Memphis, TN) — The Grizzlies have reached a three-year agreement with J.B. Bickerstaff to be their permanent head coach. Bickerstaff served as interim coach for much of the season after Memphis fired David Fizdale in late November. The Grizz went 15-and-48 under Bickerstaff to finish with the second-worst record in the league at 22-and-60. The 39-year-old is the youngest head coach in the NBA.

(Arlington, TX) — Injured Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier [[ shay-ZEER ]] made a surprise appearance at the NFL Draft last night. He took the stage to announce Pittsburgh’s first-round pick, Virginia Tech safety Terrell Edmunds. Shazier was able to walk across the stage with help from his fiancee. He’s recovering from spinal stabilization surgery after getting hurt last season.
