Zach Davies tossed six scoreless innings to lead the Brewers to a 4-1 win over the Cubs at Wrigley Field. Jorge Soler slugged a solo homer for the Cubs, who lost for only the second time in nine games. Kyle Hendricks fanned eight, but allowed three runs in six-plus innings to fall to 7-and-7.
Victor Martinez clubbed a two-run homer in the first inning and the Tigers never trailed in a 7-4 win over the White Sox in Detroit. Frankie Montas gave up six runs in just three innings to take the loss for Chicago in his first career start. Melky Cabrera went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and an RBI double for the White Sox, who had to settle for a split in the four-game set.
Matt Carpenter hit two home runs and drove in four leading the Cardinals to a 10-2 win over the Reds and three-game sweep at Busch Stadium. Carpenter has 26 homers on the season for St. Louis, which magic number to clinch the NL Central is down to seven. Randal Grichuk and Peter Bourjos each hit solo bombs, while Lance Lynn grabbed his 12th win pitching six shutout innings.
The Pirates are heading to the playoffs for the third straight year. The Pirates punched their ticket to the postseason with a 13-7 win over the Rockies last night. The Bucs can do no worse than be an NL Wild Card team.
The race for the second Wild Card spot in the American League is tightening up. The Astros’ lead on the Twins is down to one game after Houston suffered 6-5 loss to the Angels. The Halos are just a game-and-a-half back of the ‘Stros.
The contract holdout of Seattle Seahawks cornerback Kam Chancellor is over. The three-time Pro Bowler reported to the team facility on Wednesday. He is expected to play for the 0-and-2 Seahawks in Sunday’s game against the Bears.
Top-ranked Ohio State is sticking with its starting quarterback. Head coach Urban Meyer announced yesterday that Cardale Jones will be under center when the Buckeyes battle Western Michigan on Saturday. Jones was benched in last week’s win over Northern Illinois.
NASCAR has docked Clint Bowyer 25 points for an infraction prior to last week’s race at Chicagoland Speedway. NASCAR says Bowyer’s team did not properly install parts prior to a pre-race inspection. The penalty drops Bowyer into last place in the Chase for the Sprint Cup standings.
Kurt Busch may be without his crew chief for this weekend’s race in New Hampshire. Tony Gibson had an emergency appendectomy in Charlotte on Tuesday. Gibson plans to be at Sunday’s race, but won’t leave for New Hampshire until he’s medically able to.
